diary of a crafty momma

confessions of an impatient crafting momma, prone to procrastination & downright laziness.

sewing right along

so, once again, i have waited until the last minute to decide to be involved in something. this time, though, there’s no begging for votes on my part…so lucky you :)

anyway, madebyrae.com has an annual spring top sewalong and this year, i finally decided to submit a top (or two or three).  they were all super easy & super quick to make…since those are my biggest “requirements” for any sewing pattern, i was happy to make them. and now, i’m even happier to have them made & ready to wear through the rest of spring and probably summer, too!

ok, so, here goes…this top (below) was made using the sisboom “devon peasant top” pattern. i used fuschia knit (sheet) fabric and added a band of elastic to the sleeves & a couple rows to the bottom & top. it’s so much cuter than i thought it would be & very comfortable to wear. i already have another one cut, in a different fabric, and will be setting to work on it within the next day or two.

this one (again, below) is made with the same fuschia fabric (a twin sheet set goes a long way). this time i used the “la dolce vita blouse” pattern from the book “sew what you love” by tanya whelan. *(side note: i absolutely love this book! the patterns are great & the instructions are easy to follow)* anyway, i altered the pattern a bit (mainly because i didn’t pay as close attention to the finishing instructions as i maybe should have), but i am very pleased with the end results! this is definitely going into my “make again & again” folder!

and finally, this one (once more, below) is definitely my favorite of them all! i really, really, really (did i say really enough?) love this pattern! the end result is a fabulously comfy top that i could wear every day…once i make a ton more, that is! it’s another one from “sew what you love” and this one is called “everyday knit tunic”. i made a couple of these a few months again in the original sleeve length version & loved them so much that i decided to try them with shorter sleeves so i could enjoy it in spring & summer, too. i think it turned out great & already have the fabric lined up to make at least 2, if not 3 more! this one was made with jersey knit fabric that i picked up last week from the new joann store that’s open in west ashley (by the way, i am so over-joyed, excited to finally have a joann’s less than 30 miles away!). anyhow, i absolutely love the end result & can’t wait to make up more!

so, that’s it…i’ll be adding them to the flickr sewalong group today! i’m a bit nervous, but this is becoming the year that i step out of my comfort zone so i’m taking that step!

oh & i’m chugging right along with my book challenge…slower than i like, but life sometimes gets in the way of reading, so there’s nothing i can really do about that. i’m still confident that i can get 5 more books read by june 4 (i did finish “cutting for stone” and loved it).  then i’ll move onto my next self-imposed challenge…maybe more sewing related next time :) since i do love that so!

coming soon…

since i am  (still) so very computer/blog illiterate, i have pasted the pic in for the sew-along that i’m finally going to participate in this year.  (can’t figure out how to link it…think i’ve had too much wine to really think straight about it).

i’m super excited & have already made up a couple tops & promise to post pics tomorrow. there are lots of very talented ladies taking part & i’m hugely inspired by all the pics i’ve seen.

so, until tomorrow!

my 6-week challenge

i love books.

and i love to read.

i have been known to wander around barnes & noble for hours just looking at all the books & making a list of ones to read, ones to buy, & ones to check-out from the library. since getting my kindle 2 years ago, i’ve become somewhat of a book-hoarder…having downloaded tons of free books that i one day plan hope to read. also, while on vacation in st. croix, the villa we were staying in had tons of books & i just had to make a list of all the ones i wanted to “check-out” either digitally on my kindle or the physical book from the library. so, my love of books follows me everywhere!

so, happy with the fact that i’ve managed to finish 5 books over the last 6 weeks, i’ve given myself a challenge for the next 6 weeks. because i don’t have enough going on in my life ;)

since the kids have 6 weeks of school left, i’m going to challenge myself to read at least 6 books in that time. my only “stipulation” is that it has to have more than 250 pages…other than that, there are no rules. and honestly, i already have the 6 books picked out…most i’m starting from scratch, but a couple will be ones that i need to finally finish.

so, now i’m off to “get-my-read-on”! these are just the first 4 that i have on my list and there’s no common theme between any of them!

slowly, but surely

st croix

so, we’ve been back nearly a week & i’m finally starting to get back into my usual schedule.

well, kinda. there’s still a couple bags left to unpack, pictures to upload & order, laundry to put away, & all manner of other things that i managed to avoid pre-vacation (scheduling doc appts, dentist appts, & vet visits among them).

but for now, the kids have gone back to school, the laundry has been washed (if not yet put away), & i’ve returned to crafting (yippee!).  all is right with the world.

so, just a quick update & a few pics while i have a few minutes to myself before i get the kiddos off to bed & do my evening “around the house clean-up routine”. we had a great trip & once again, can’t wait til we return :) !

all our bags are packed & we’ve got all we need for our 10 day island escape to st. croix.

well, hopefully, we have all we need…i’m always afraid i’ll forget something. but, as of right now, everything i can think to take has been packed.

we’re waking up bright & early at the butt-crack of dawn to fly down & be there with plenty of time to enjoy the beach before the sun sets!

can”t wait.

panic setting in…

toes in the water!

toes in the water!

we’re a little more than a week away from our 10-day vacation back to St. Croix! we are all so excited!

but with that excitement also comes the pre-vacation stress…at least it does for me. and i can feel the stress & panic setting in. did i pack enough? did i bring all the things we’ll need? do we have sunscreen? bathing suits? birth certificates or passports? books to read? toothbrushes & toothpaste? glasses? did i remember the tickets/boarding passes?

and that’s just for the things that we’re taking with us, there’s also the house/pet care stress & panic. did i leave any lights on? too many lights on? are all the appliances turned off? did we lock the doors? did we leave enough food & water for the cats til the pet sitter comes?

i realize that i shouldn’t be stressed by most of these things & yet, i am…it’s somehow become part of who i am…stressing/worrying about things that for the most part are out of my control. and, sadly,  i don’t mean just vacations…i’m always (well, nearly always) worried/stressing about something. but, that’s another post, for another day. for today, i leave you with a few more pics from our trip last year & the promise of tons more after our coming trip!

sewing up a storm!

just a quick little post to share some of the things i’ve made this week!

i am completely in love with knit maxi skirts! i’ve made 4 already this week  & have plans to make 3 more over the next week or so…i’ll have one for every day of the week! yippee! they really are super comfy & super quick to put together. and sshhh, don’t tell, but some of them are made from knit sheets…that’s my little easy trick secret ;) . a twin sheet set goes a long way!

i’m back to being crazy busy, getting ready for jordan’s birthday party next saturday & our st croix vacation is just 18 days away! i can already feel all the “party-planning” stress building, along with the “pre-vacation” anxiety that’s creeping up, too…so, bless my family over these next 3 weeks cause i’m gonna be a wreck!

but, for now, here’s some pics & i’m off to more craft business research & knit skirt & top sewing. and i guess i should throw in at least a little house cleaning :) .

just because

13 years & 2 kids later...it still fits!

13 years & 2 kids later…it still fits!

yes, that is me in my wedding dress. no, it is not from the day i got married. it is, in fact, from a couple months ago when i tried my dress on & let had jordan take a picture to prove that yes, nearly 14 years & 2 kids later, it still fit. although i must admit it was tighter in some areas (waist/hips) & looser in others (chest)…my weight may hover in the same place it did all those years ago, but gravity (and breastfeeding) has shifted the placement of that weight.

so, i’m sharing this pic just because i like to share & it’s too many words for twitter & i wanted to reach more than just my fb family & friends…so, i put it on my blog. and because i’m in one of my weird “i need to write a blog post, but don’t really have much to say” moods (by the way…i get into those moods a. lot). and because i still can’t believe that this month we will celebrate our 14th wedding anniversary. and because i’m still coming to grips with the fact that my son is 13 & my daughter will soon be 8. and because, my gosh, time flies by so quickly before i know it my babies will be graduating & i’ll be wondering where all the time went!

but for now, i’m sharing just because. i’ll return to crafty posts tomorrow. or tuesday. one day this week. promise.

fresh start…tomorrow

i am impatient & flighty & indecisive & lazy & seriously prone to procrastination & just plain avoiding things that i don’t want to do.

i know these things about myself.

i’ve said time & time again that i need to change these things. yet, i never do. because i’m also stubborn & set in my ways.

it’s like a vicious cycle…wanting to change, but not quite feeling enough desire to actually do it…round & round on a crazy merry-go-round.

but, today i have decided that i am going to attempt (to the best of my ability) to change at least a little bit about myself. because i have decided that i need to figure out a way to make my crafting & blogging actually lucrative. and since i know there are lots of ways to do that, i’m starting my research today so that i can figure out what i need to do tomorrow to get the whole ball rolling.

so, i’m off to research & search & read & write & craft & just generally get busy finding ways to make some money doing the things i love!

wish me luck!
